Giovanni Petri in conversation with Shoma Chaudhury at the Synapse Conclave in February '25

At the last Synapse Conclave, held in Gurugram-India, Giovanni Petri, Professor at the Network Science Institute in London discussed how AI is effectively helping decode Sperm whale communication.
Whales have the largest brains, 6x the size of humans. They live in clans. Babysit. Gather for birth. And they talk to each other developing language patterns akin to dialects.

Dr. Petri is the Network Science Lead of Project CETI (Cetacean Translation Initiative) at the CENTAI Institute where he works at the interface between complex systems and algebraic topology to model and analyze the intricate and dynamic interactions present in Sperm whale communication, coordination and cooperation, providing a foundation for translating it.

The video of his conversation with Shoma Chaudhury, journalist and founder-director of the Synapse Conclave, sheds light on the fascinating work of understanding the language of cetaceans and is now available online!
