Navigating Peer Review: Insights from Experienced Reviewers
The peer review process is a cornerstone of academic publishing, shaping the quality and integrity of scientific research. However, navigating this process—both as a reviewer and as an author—can be challenging, especially for early-career researchers.
This two-part event series will provide a comprehensive exploration of peer review, featuring a panel discussion with experienced reviewers and editors, followed by a hands-on workshop where participants will put their learning into practice.
Part 1: Panel Discussion (90 minutes)
In the first session, panelists will share insights on writing constructive, fair, and impactful reviews. The discussion will cover how to approach a review, balance critique with encouragement, navigate challenges, and respond to peer review feedback.
A second session will follow for participants to practice the strategies discussed in the panel.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this two-part series, attendees will be able to:
- Understand the Role and Responsibilities of a Peer Reviewer – Learn the purpose of peer review, how to get started as a reviewer, and the ethical considerations involved.
- Develop Skills for Writing Constructive and Effective Peer Reviews – Gain practical strategies for structuring a balanced and insightful review.
- Learn How to Navigate and Respond to Peer Review Feedback – Explore best practices for interpreting reviewer comments and crafting professional responses.
- Apply Peer Review Techniques in Practice – Gain hands-on experience reviewing real papers, discussing feedback with peers, and refining review-writing skills.
This workshop series is ideal for NetSI PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, but also for current NetSI Co-op students and research assistants looking to refine their peer review skills, contribute meaningfully to their academic communities, and improve their own experiences with publishing.
